Before submitting your site to search engines, make sure your pages are prepared for proper indexing. See our "Search Engine Prep" for more information and handy tips. Also, make sure you have a top-level domain name (.com, .net, .biz, .ws, .org, etc.),
as most search engines will not index subdomains that are given to you by free webhosts, or personal home page addresses from your ISP.
THE "BIG" SEARCH ENGINES and DIRECTORIES
(Yahoo, AOL, Google, Lycos, MSN, Hotbot, etc.)
Unless you are selling a product that is truly unusual and hard to find, it is going to be very difficult to get a top listing. But if you have chosen your keywords well, you may place near the top when somebody searches using multiple keywords that match yours.
Also keep in mind that it may take several weeks or even months for your listing to appear, and there is no guarantee that you will even be listed at all. But it is imperative that you submit your site to all the big search engines; if you get indexed properly, they will bring you tons of traffic.

SMALLER SEARCH ENGINES and DIRECTORIES
Don't ignore the lesser-known search engines. True, they don't usually generate much traffic, but every bit counts. Far better to get a top 10 listing in a smaller search engine that only generates one or two sales a month for you, than to get
buried at number 138,546 out of 139,028 on a large search engine.
Submit to as many of the small search engines as possible if they offer a free listing.
If you get no traffic, you lose nothing. If some of them do generate sales for you, GOOD! Who knows; that ONE single hit from one of the smaller search engines may develop into one of your best customers, so don't overlook these.
