Before submitting your site to search engines, you must first prepare each page so that it will be indexed properly. You also need to get a top-level domain name, as many search engines do not index subdomains. (in other words, if you have a domain name issued by a free web host, and it looks like this :
mysite.freecheesewebhost.com/mmbrpgs/mysite
Then most search engines will reject you. See our Domain Name Facts and FAQs Page for more information on this subject.
Each of your web pages must have its own PAGE TITLE, META DESCRIPTION, and proper META TAG keywords. If you are using a Microsoft program to create your web pages, look under the FILE menu for "web page properties." The procedure may be different for different programs. Consult your software manual.
PAGE TITLE
This appears at the very top left of the computer screen when your page is displayed. For example, the title of this page is "Search Engine Prep". It is also the first line displayed when your page appears in search engine listings.
PAGE DESCRIPTION
This is the information that appears as the second and third lines in search engine results. For instance, THIS page would be listed like this:
Search Engine Prep Informative article tells how to prepare your web pages for submission to search engines. http://deelzonline.com/searchprep.html
META TAGS
These are the "keywords" that will be used to locate your page when someone conducts a search. It is very important to use as many relevant keywords as possible, as this will bring your listing closer to the top of search results when someone does a specialized search with multiple keywords matching yours. You should also use as many variations of words and phrases as possible, and be sure to repeat words in their singular and plural forms. For example, if you are selling silver jewelry, the list of keywords for your "chains and bracelets" page should look something like this:
sterling,silver,sterling silver,bracelets,bracelet,silver bracelets,silver bracelet,sterling bracelets,sterling bracelet,sterling silver bracelet,sterling silver bracelets,chain,chains,silver chain,silver chains,sterling chain,sterling chains,sterling silver chain,sterling silver chains.
DON'T DO THIS:
Don't ever use bogus keywords to artificially generate traffic to your site. If you do this, search engines will not index your site (some may even blacklist you), the traffic you artificially generate will probably not produce any sales anyway, and last, but not least, TROUBLE WILL FIND YOU. Guaranteed. Don't ask.
ONE LAST THING
Check every page on your site for broken links. Many search engine robots now follow the links leading out of your site, and if they encounter a "404" error code, your site won't get indexed at all.
HOT TIP
Always use your COMPANY NAME or WEBSITE NAME as a meta keyword on your home page. This way, even if you are listed so deep in a general category search result that nobody will ever find you, you may still appear at or near the top of search results if somebody searches using your company or website name in a search.
For example, lets say you are looking for Unbroken Chain Internet Radio.
If you use the search term "internet radio" you'll get a long, deep list of search results that you may wade through for hours without ever finding it.
A search for "unbroken chain" will yield mostly dead-head related sites, with the odd spiritual or country music site thrown in for a dash of flavor.
But if you use the full company name for your search, then voila! There it is. "Unbroken Chain Internet Radio". Result number one of one results. (there's your free plug, Chris. Don't say I never did anything for you.)
